Does Charcoal Toothpaste Work?

Charcoal toothpaste has gained a lot of popularity. Activated charocal is derived from materials such as wood and coconut shells, and has properties to effectively absorb toxins. As such, it is used medicinally for accidental poisonings. It's absorbent properties, however, is not limited only to toxins. Activated charcoal can also interfere with medicines that you take and make them ineffective.

Although charcoal toothpaste may have abrasive properties that can remove surface stains, there's no evidence to show that it can remove stains under the tooth's surface. In fact, it has been suggested that charcoal toothpaste may interfere with the natural mineral content of teeth. It also usually does not contain fluoride, so it will not protect against cavities. Currently, there is insufficient research to determine the long term effects of charcoal toothpaste, so we do not recommend charcoal toothpaste for regular use.
